For Gabi, inciting change starts from her community – thoughtful conversations with
a stranger. No person is insignificant to her. Gabi and Fred led the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists’ National Trachoma and Eye Health Program in the 1970s, visiting 465 Indigenous communities and treating 100,000 people. The program was the first of its kind in Australia and shaped the health sector’s approach to involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in decisions that affect them. Gabi’s dedication to galvanising people sees her travel the country to celebrate students who demonstrate humanitarian values and talk to community groups about how they can end avoidable blindness.
